Why Physical Therapy is the Best First Treatment for Back Pain

A study published in the Journal of Health Sciences in May of this year found that when patients chose physical therapy as their first treatment for back pain, the need for opioids may be eliminated. However, people are often hoping for a quick fix for their pain. They pop a pill or opt for surgery when they should be heading to their local physical therapy clinic.

The most common treatments for back pain include surgery and spinal injections, which are not always effective at eliminating the pain and can worsen the symptoms. However, the American College of Physicians recommends noninvasive treatments that do not include pharmacologic treatment.

The focus of the study was to determine if beginning treatment with physical therapy lowered overall healthcare costs. They found that when back pain patients started with physical therapy before any other treatment, they were 89 percent less likely to need an opioid prescription for pain. They were also 28 percent less likely to require advanced imaging, such as an MRI, and 15 percent less likely to need to go to the emergency room for their back pain. This means significant out of pocket savings associated with the overall treatment of back pain.

How Does Physical Therapy Help Back Pain?

Physical therapists are specially trained to understand pain and how it relates to the body. They can identify and isolate weaknesses in the body, and then create individualized treatment programs that increase strength and mobility. Both of which lead to reduced pain. If more advanced testing or treatment is required, a physical therapist can refer the patient to a specialist.

Some people do not see a physical therapist first for back pain because of insurance limitations. However, Step & Spine Physical Therapy participates with all local insurance companies. At the very least, patients can schedule an evaluation with a physical therapist. This appointment will provide insight into the cause of the pain and provide the next step for helping the patient improve.

It is crucial for people to know their options when it comes to pain. Drugs only provide temporary relief and surgery (if necessary) should almost always be preceded by physical therapy. If surgery is necessary, physical therapy provides the strengthening foundation necessary for optimal recovery.
